In this film, Edward has all the power. Whereas the vicarious thrills offered to the audience by Thelma and Louise come from women taking control forcefully from chauvinistic patriarchs, the thrills offered to the early 90s woman by Pretty Woman all come in the form of an underprivileged girl being allowed to enjoy the material pleasures of exclusive boutiques, of penthouse suites, of expensive clothes and of suarees with the rich and privileged – and all by the benevolence of a wealthy man and his cash. In this way the film represents the culmination of ‘eighties commercialism and love of all things expensive packaged into the age-old Cinderella rags-to-riches-via-handsome-prince-charming tale, where the man is good but the fact that he can buy Chanel dresses is better. The new woman’s film may be capable of offering its female audience a vision of contemporary femininity and the claiming of power and assertiveness as female qualities, but in Vivian and Edward the audience are offered the chance to indulge their materialism and vanity. We have already seen that the melodrama pictures of the golden era offered to indulge stereotypically feminine tastes for grandiose love affairs and heightened emotion, and identified their audience as caring, weeping, emotional wives and daughters, and in a similar way we can see how the makers of Pretty Woman identified its primarily female target audience as dress-shopping, champagne-quaffing, magazine-reading ‘eighties children, probably paying for their cinema ticket with Daddy’s money.
