The dilemma for the cosmopolitan thinker is how the man can reconcile a role with a moral citizen within his own community or state with a role as a world citizen attempting to fulfill a moral duty to those elsewhere. Aristotle had summarized the possibility of the two conflicting demands stating “it is possible to be a good citizen without possessing the excellence which is the quality of a good man” (p187 Booth et al 2001). There are some issues in particular that test the loyalty of a patriotic citizen in the face of a commitment to cosmopolitan moral law – the temptation or requirement to commit some form of crime against humanity in pursuit of state policy (soldier’s fighting a war abroad that they felt to be unjust would serve as a strong example of this) and the question as to whether taking action to protect the planet’s environment should take precedence over the economic policy or interests of the individual’s own nation state. It would seem obvious that for a cosmopolitan thinker to live in accordance with supposed moral duties to citizens beyond, he or she would at some stage have to forego loyalty or obedience to the nation state.
